‘Smax Smith makes his way onto the grid. As soon as the green lights go out, I see the huge tyres stretch with centrifugal force while the massive chassis bends as the rears try to overtake the fronts. The car disappears in an invigorating cloud of rubber smoke and tear-gas fumes. It’s half way down the straight before you know it. Smax says it’s the same for the drivers – they drive on their subconscious for the first half.’
